Motorola Android 12 Update: Supported Phones & Release Date

The developer preview build of Android 12 is already out. As OEMs are slowly releasing Android 11 updates to their smartphones, Google has already started working on Android 12. The developer build is released for Android app developers so that they can get their applications ready for the next Android version. The new Android 12 developer preview does give us a sneak on what this new iteration will bring to us but we will surely see more features when the official build launches later this year, probably in the Q3 of 2021. The new Android version does bring in a few changes in terms of design. The new Android UI resembles what we already get with Samsung’s OneUI. Many might even say that the design elements of Android 12 are inspired by One UI. When the stable build of Android 12 will be released, it will first come to only Pixel phones. Following that, some OEMs will take on the stable build of Android 12 from Google and start releasing the beta update to their smartphones. Lenovo-owned Motorola is one of them.

Over the years, people have applauded and loved Motorola’s idea of keeping the software simple. Unlike some other OEMs, Motorola does not change much when it comes to Android. They just add a few Motorola phone elements and keeps the overall aesthetics of the software similar to what we see on Pixel smartphones. This resulted in timely updates a few years ago, but ever since Lenovo took over, things have been different.

Right now we only have one Motorola device running on the stable build of Android 11 with others to soon follow. Considering we are already in April of 2021, not getting a stable update even after six months is not what we expect from Motorola. But as mentioned above, ever since Lenovo took over Motorola, things have been slow in terms of updates. But slow updates do not mean that the new Motorola phones are not getting updates. Motorola promises two major Android updates for their mid-range and flagship series smartphones. While the budget Motorola devices only receive one major Android update. Based on this information, we have compiled the following list of Android 12 eligible Motorola phones.

Motorola Android 12 Update Tracker

July 31: Motorola has confirmed that Motorola Edge 20 series will receive the Android 12 and Android 13 Update.

These Motorola phones will likely receive an Android 12 update

Release Date

Last year, Motorola rolled out the Android 11 update four months after Google released the stable build for its Pixel devices. So if Google follows the same rollout timeline we can expect that Motorola phones will start getting Android 12 Update from January 2022. You can keep checking Motorola’s Software Upgrade section for all the latest Android build updates.

It is difficult to say when we will see at least one of the eligible devices actually running on Android 12. It might happen this year, or we could see a delay to next year. So it might take a while. However, all the mentioned Motorola smartphones may receive the Android 12 sometime in the future.
