What is Clean Energy Charging in iOS 16?
iOS 16 has been released and can be installed on an iPhone 8 or later. Apple has introduced some very cool features to iOS, such as the new lock screen overhaul, new features in Messages, PassKeys, etc. In a press release on Apple Newsroom, Apple talked about “Clean Energy Charging” as a new feature coming to iOS 16 soon.
“Clean Energy Charging aims to decrease the carbon footprint of the iPhone by optimizing charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources,” said Apple in the press release. After scrolling down, we found that this feature is available only to users in the US.
Clean Energy Charging Feature on iPhone
Clean Energy Charging is Apple’s next step toward reducing the carbon footprint of the iPhone. This new feature will help optimize charging times whenever the grid uses cleaner energy sources, thus reducing the iPhone’s carbon footprint. The Clean Energy Charging option is available in the “Battery Health and Charging” section (iOS 16.1 beta tester only). There you will see the Clean Energy Charging toggle.
Apple did not discuss the Clean Energy Charging feature during the WWDC 22 keynote. Therefore, we know nothing more about the Clean Energy Charging feature. Apple has not disclosed how the feature would work on the iPhone. They only talked about what the feature would do and its availability.
As per a theory by 9to5Mac, iOS 16 will wait to charge the iPhone until power grids are less congested and more clean energy capacity is available. iOS is known for helping users take care of their battery health by offering helpful features. The Clean Energy Charging feature will allow the user to preserve the battery and the planet.
When will the Clean Energy Charging feature arrive on iPhone?
It is unclear when exactly we might see the Clean Energy Charging feature coming to iOS 16, but it will surely come with an iOS 16 point update later this year. IOS 16.1 first beta is available to developers, including the new Clean Energy Charging option.
The press release also mentioned several other features that are not yet live would be coming to iOS 16 later this year. These features include iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities, Matter smart home connectivity, and of course, Clean Energy Charging. Other features of iOS 16, like Game Center SharePlay support and Contacts integration, the Freeform app, key sharing, and easy Shortcuts setup, are also not live.
